Seven Lakes (Chile)

The Seven Lakes (Spanish: Siete Lagos) is a tourist region and scenic route in the Andes Mountains of Chile, specifically within the Los Ríos Region. The area is known for its stunning natural beauty, characterized by a series of seven distinct lakes interconnected by rivers and surrounded by lush Valdivian temperate rainforest.

The seven lakes, generally considered in order from north to south along the most common tourist route, are:

  • Riñihue Lake: The northernmost of the seven, known for its clear waters and bordering the town of Riñihue.

  • Panguipulli Lake: Larger than Riñihue, Panguipulli borders the town of the same name and serves as a central hub for tourism in the region.

  • Calafquén Lake: Known for its dark, volcanic sand beaches and the Villarrica volcano visible in the distance.

  • Pellaifa Lake: Smaller and more secluded, Pellaifa Lake is characterized by its pristine shores and tranquility.

  • Pullinque Lake: A smaller lake connected to Pellaifa and Calafquén. It is known for its hydroelectric power plant.

  • Pirihueico Lake: Borders Argentina and is crossed by the Hua Hum international ferry, providing a unique border crossing experience.

  • Lácar Lake (Argentina): While technically located in Argentina, Lácar Lake is often considered the seventh "lake" due to its proximity and connectivity to the others, particularly through the Hua Hum pass. However, it is not one of the seven lakes located solely within Chile.

The Seven Lakes route offers opportunities for various outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking, fishing, camping, and horseback riding. The towns surrounding the lakes, such as Panguipulli, provide lodging, restaurants, and other tourist services. The region's rich indigenous history and culture, particularly that of the Mapuche people, also adds to its appeal. The area is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists seeking to experience the natural beauty of Chilean Patagonia.
