Sev Berd

Sev Berd (Black Fortress) is a well-preserved 19th-century Russian fortress located in the city of Gyumri, Armenia. Constructed in the aftermath of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829, it was built from black basalt stone, hence its name. The fortress served as a significant strategic outpost in the Caucasus region, designed to control the surrounding area and protect the Russian Empire's southern borders.

Sev Berd is a circular fortification, encompassing barracks, arsenals, and other military structures. It played a role in subsequent conflicts, including the Crimean War and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Although it was initially designed for a large garrison, its importance diminished with advances in military technology. In later years, it was utilized for other purposes before falling into disrepair.

Today, Sev Berd stands as a historical landmark, attracting tourists and offering insights into the region's complex history and geopolitical significance during the 19th century. Restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve the fortress and promote its cultural value. It is considered one of Gyumri's most important historical sites.
