Science Fantasy (magazine)

Science Fantasy was a British science fiction magazine published from 1950 to 1966 by Nova Publications, and later by Roberts & Vinter. It was initially titled Nova, changing its name to Science Fantasy with the second issue. The magazine is notable for its focus on more literary and experimental science fiction and fantasy stories, often blending the two genres in ways that were uncommon for the time.

Edited primarily by John Carnell, Science Fantasy became known for showcasing the early work of significant authors such as J.G. Ballard, Brian Aldiss, and John Wyndham. It also published stories by established writers like Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Carnell actively sought out unconventional and thought-provoking material, encouraging writers to push the boundaries of the science fiction and fantasy genres.

The magazine's emphasis on quality writing and its willingness to publish less conventional stories contributed to its reputation as a breeding ground for new talent and innovative ideas. Its influence on the development of both science fiction and fantasy literature in the United Kingdom is significant, and many consider it a key publication in the history of British genre magazines. Despite its relatively short run, Science Fantasy left a lasting legacy due to its editorial vision and the quality of the stories it published.
