Schwefel

Schwefel is the German word for sulfur.

Sulfur is a chemical element with the symbol S and atomic number 16. It is abundant, multivalent, and nonmetallic. Under normal conditions, sulfur atoms form cyclic octatomic molecules with the chemical formula S₈. Elemental sulfur is a bright yellow, crystalline solid at room temperature.

Sulfur occurs as a pure element and as sulfide and sulfate minerals. It is an essential element for life and is found in two amino acids, cysteine and methionine. It is commercially produced primarily from fossil fuels, where it is removed as a pollutant.

Sulfur is used in a wide variety of industrial processes, including the production of sulfuric acid, fertilizers, and rubber. It is also used in the manufacture of matches, insecticides, and fungicides.
