Satao (elephant)

Satao was a Kenyan elephant, known as one of the largest elephants in Africa, notable for his enormous tusks. He was believed to have been over 50 years old at the time of his death and was named after one of the rangers who originally tracked him. Satao resided primarily in Tsavo East National Park.

Satao's exceptionally large ivory made him a prime target for poachers. He was killed in May 2014 by poachers using poison arrows. His death highlighted the ongoing and severe threat posed by poaching to African elephants, particularly those with large tusks.

Conservation efforts to protect elephants and combat poaching were significantly intensified following Satao's death. Anti-poaching patrols were increased, and tracking technology was deployed to monitor elephant populations more closely. His story served as a rallying cry for conservationists and raised global awareness about the plight of elephants in Africa.
