Richard Newman (poet)

Richard Newman is an American poet, critic, and professor of English. He is known for his work exploring themes of family, history, memory, and the natural world, often utilizing a blend of formal and free verse techniques.

Newman earned a BA from Washington University in St. Louis, an MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and a PhD from the University of Chicago.

He is the author of several poetry collections, including All the Wives of the Saints (Truman State University Press), Domestic Fugues (Steel Toe Books), The Silence of Water (BkMk Press), Brothers of the Head (Finishing Line Press), and Ghost Child of the Atalanta Bloom (forthcoming, Able Muse Press). His poems have appeared in journals such as The Southern Review, The Gettysburg Review, New Letters, Poetry Daily, and The Missouri Review.

Newman has received numerous awards and fellowships, including grants from the Illinois Arts Council and the Missouri Arts Council. He has taught at several universities, including Truman State University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he currently serves as a professor. He is also actively involved in the St. Louis literary community. His critical work often focuses on contemporary American poetry.
