Lewis began his comedy career in the 1970s, performing in New York City comedy clubs. He quickly gained attention for his dark, observational humor, which explored themes of anxiety, relationships, and personal insecurities. His signature look included dark clothing, often all black, which complemented his gloomy comedic persona.
He released several comedy albums, including I'm in Trouble Again (1985) and I'm Doomed (1990). These albums captured his distinctive style and helped solidify his reputation as a leading figure in stand-up comedy.
Lewis also had a successful acting career, with notable roles in television and film. He co-starred with Jamie Lee Curtis in the sitcom Anything But Love (1989-1992) and had recurring roles in Curb Your Enthusiasm as a fictionalized version of himself. He also appeared in films such as Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Hugo Pool (1997), and Drunks (1995). His portrayal of himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm brought him renewed recognition and allowed him to showcase his comedic talents to a new generation.
Throughout his career, Lewis was open about his struggles with mental health and addiction, often incorporating these experiences into his comedy. He was considered an influential figure in the world of stand-up comedy, inspiring many comedians with his unique voice and unflinching honesty. He announced his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease in April 2023.
