Results of the 1976 Victorian state election (Legislative Assembly)

The 1976 Victorian state election was held on 20 March 1976 to elect the 81 members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. The election was conducted using full preferential voting in single-member districts.

The incumbent Liberal Party, led by Premier Rupert Hamer, won a comfortable victory and retained government, marking their fifth consecutive term in office. The Australian Labor Party (ALP), led by Clyde Holding, remained in opposition, though they made some gains in seats. The National Party, led by Peter Ross-Edwards, also held their ground.

The key issues debated during the campaign included economic management, industrial relations, and social services. The Liberal Party campaigned on their record of stability and economic growth, while the ALP focused on issues of unemployment and social inequality.

The final seat count in the Legislative Assembly was:

  • Liberal Party: 41 seats
  • Australian Labor Party: 31 seats
  • National Party: 8 seats
  • Independent: 1 seat

This result gave the Liberal Party a majority of seats and allowed them to form a government. The election saw a slight swing towards the ALP, but not enough to dislodge the incumbent Liberal government. The overall result reflected the continued dominance of the Liberal Party in Victorian politics during this period.

Following the election, Rupert Hamer continued as Premier, leading the state until 1981. The election solidified the political landscape of Victoria for the remainder of the 1970s.
