Reguibat

The Reguibat are a Sahrawi tribal confederation with origins tracing back to the Western Sahara and parts of Mauritania, Morocco, and Algeria. They are historically nomadic pastoralists and traders, known for their complex social structure and significant influence in the region.

The Reguibat's genealogical roots are generally traced back to Sidi Ahmed Reguibi, a religious figure of the 16th century, from whom the tribe derives its name. They are divided into two main branches: the Sahil (coastal) and the Legouacem (warriors), with various sub-tribes branching out from these. The Sahil are generally considered to be of religious or learned status, while the Legouacem traditionally held a dominant military role.

Historically, the Reguibat controlled vast areas of the Sahara and were instrumental in the trans-Saharan trade routes. Their traditional lifestyle revolved around camel herding, date farming in oases, and trade. They possessed a reputation for their fierce independence and resistance to colonial powers.

In the 20th century, the Reguibat were deeply involved in the Western Sahara conflict, with members participating on both sides. The ongoing territorial dispute and political instability in the region continue to impact the Reguibat and their traditional way of life. Their cultural heritage, including their oral traditions, poetry, and craftsmanship, remains an important part of Sahrawi identity.
