RadCom
RadCom is a portmanteau of "Radio Communication" and is a common term, especially in the United Kingdom, referring to the hobby of amateur radio and the associated activities surrounding it.
RadCom often encompasses a wide range of interests, including but not limited to:
- Technical Experimentation: Building and modifying radio equipment, antennas, and related electronics.
- Operating: Making contacts with other amateur radio operators (hams) around the world using various modes (voice, digital, Morse code).
- Contesting: Participating in radio contests, attempting to make as many contacts as possible within a given timeframe.
- Emergency Communication: Providing communication support during emergencies and disasters when conventional communication infrastructure is unavailable.
- Education: Learning about radio theory, electronics, and communication techniques.
- Social Activities: Participating in club meetings, field days, and other social events with fellow radio amateurs.
The term is frequently associated with the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB), whose monthly journal is also titled "RadCom". The RSGB plays a significant role in promoting and supporting RadCom activities within the UK. The term can be used to refer to content specific to amateur radio, related skills, and the community that surrounds it. It highlights the broad scope of the hobby beyond simply transmitting and receiving radio signals.
