R11/R34 (New York City Subway car)

The R11 and R34 were New York City Subway cars built by Budd in 1949 and 1965, respectively. Both car classes were part of the city's Independent Subway System (IND) fleet. The R11 was the first stainless steel subway car built for the New York City Transit Authority, intended as a prototype and often referred to as the "Silverliner." It featured a fluted stainless steel exterior and air conditioning, both novel features at the time. Only four R11 cars were produced.

The R34 cars, while built much later, were essentially a production version of the R11's design concepts. They shared the stainless steel construction but incorporated improvements and modifications based on the R11's service experience. A total of 40 R34 cars were built.

Both the R11 and R34 cars operated on various IND lines throughout their service lives. The R11s were retired in the late 1970s, with one car preserved at the New York Transit Museum. The R34s were retired in the 1980s, replaced by newer rolling stock. Both car classes played a significant role in the development of modern subway car design and materials used by the New York City Subway.
