Pontivy

Pontivy is a commune in the Morbihan department of Brittany in north-western France. It is the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement of Pontivy.

History:

Originally known as "Pondivi," the town grew around a bridge (French: pont) over the river Blavet. Its name translates to "Ives' Bridge." It was later renamed Napoléonville during the Napoleonic era (early 19th century), reflecting Napoleon Bonaparte's plan to establish a strategic military presence in the region. After the fall of Napoleon, the town reverted to its original name, Pontivy.

Pontivy is situated at the confluence of the Blavet River and the Canal de Nantes à Brest, making it a key inland port and a significant center for navigation in the region. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills and agricultural land.
