Pennsylvania Canal (Delaware Division)

The Pennsylvania Canal (Delaware Division) was a branch of the Pennsylvania Canal system that ran along the Delaware River in eastern Pennsylvania. Constructed primarily between 1830 and 1832, it extended from Bristol, Bucks County, north to Easton, Northampton County, a distance of approximately 60 miles. Its primary purpose was to facilitate the transportation of anthracite coal from the Lehigh Valley to Philadelphia and other markets.

The canal's route generally followed the Delaware River, utilizing the river itself for portions of its length. Canal boats were towed by mules or horses walking along a towpath constructed alongside the waterway. Locks were used to overcome changes in elevation. The Delaware Division connected with the Lehigh Canal at Easton, allowing for a continuous water route from the coal fields to the tidewater.

The Delaware Division played a significant role in the economic development of the region during the 19th century, supporting industries such as coal mining, iron production, and manufacturing. However, its importance declined with the rise of railroads, which offered faster and more efficient transportation.

Commercial traffic on the Delaware Division ceased in the 1930s. Today, portions of the canal and its towpath have been preserved as a recreational trail known as the Delaware Canal State Park, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, and nature observation. The remaining sections serve as a reminder of Pennsylvania's canal era.
