Pemberton Hall (Eastern Illinois University)
Pemberton Hall is the oldest residence hall on the campus of Eastern Illinois University (EIU) in Charleston, Illinois. Completed in 1899, it was the first building constructed specifically for the Illinois State Normal School, which would later become EIU. Initially, it served exclusively as a women's residence hall, and its construction was prompted by the need to provide safe and supervised housing for female students attending the newly established institution.
The building is named after Ellen H. Martin Pemberton, an advocate for women's education and the first woman appointed to the Eastern Illinois State Normal School Board.
Pemberton Hall is built in a Romanesque Revival architectural style, characterized by its red brick exterior, arched windows and doorways, and prominent corner tower. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations to modernize its facilities while preserving its historical character.
Pemberton Hall is known for its longstanding traditions and its significance in the history of Eastern Illinois University. It continues to operate as a residence hall, housing both male and female students, and remains a symbol of EIU's commitment to education and its rich heritage. The building is also rumored to be haunted, contributing to its mystique and attracting interest from paranormal investigators.
