Pelendava (castra)
Pelendava was a Roman fort (castra) located in present-day Romania. It was situated in the Roman province of Dacia, specifically in the region of Oltenia. The precise location is near the modern-day city of Craiova.
Pelendava was part of the Roman defensive system along the limes (frontier) of Dacia. Its strategic importance stemmed from its position controlling routes and resources in the area. The fort likely served as a military outpost, housing a Roman garrison responsible for patrolling the surrounding territory, maintaining order, and protecting against incursions from outside the Roman province.
Archaeological excavations at the site of Pelendava have revealed evidence of Roman military presence, including remains of the fort's walls, towers, and internal structures. Artifacts discovered include Roman pottery, coins, weapons, and other items associated with Roman military life. These finds provide valuable insights into the history and culture of Roman Dacia.
The fort's name, Pelendava, is believed to be of Dacian origin, suggesting a pre-Roman settlement existed at the same location. Following the Roman withdrawal from Dacia in the 3rd century AD, the fate of Pelendava is less clear. It is possible the site was abandoned or continued to be inhabited by the local population.
