Papineau (electoral district)

Papineau is a federal electoral district (riding) in Quebec, Canada. It is located in the city of Montreal.

History and Boundaries:

The riding was created in 2003 from parts of the former ridings of Anjou—Rivière-des-Prairies, Laurier—Sainte-Marie, and Rosemont—Petite-Patrie. The electoral district is named after the Papineau neighbourhood, which in turn is named for Joseph Papineau, a prominent politician in Lower Canada in the 19th century. It is bordered to the north by Rivière-des-Prairies, to the west by Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie, to the east by Honoré-Mercier and to the south by Hochelaga. The riding encompasses the Montreal neighbourhoods of Villeray, Petite-Patrie, Saint-Michel, and parts of Rosemont.

Demographics:

Papineau is a diverse riding with a significant immigrant population. It has a large number of residents who speak languages other than English or French at home.

Political Significance:

Papineau gained national and international attention when Justin Trudeau, the current Prime Minister of Canada, was elected as its Member of Parliament (MP) in 2007. He held the seat until the present day. Prior to Trudeau, the riding had a relatively short electoral history, with the Bloc Québécois winning in 2004. Its choice of Trudeau elevated the riding's prominence within Canadian politics.

Members of Parliament:

  • 2004-2007: Vivian Barbot (Bloc Québécois)
  • 2007-Present: Justin Trudeau (Liberal Party of Canada)
