Oath of Allegiance (Australia)

The Oath of Allegiance in Australia is a formal declaration of loyalty to the Australian monarch and the country. It is a key component of the citizenship application process and is typically recited at citizenship ceremonies. The current version of the oath, as amended in 2020, is:

"From this time forward, under God, I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey."

The oath signifies a commitment to upholding Australian values, respecting the rights and freedoms of others, and adhering to the laws of the nation. It replaced an earlier oath that focused solely on allegiance to the monarch. The phrase "under God" is optional, allowing individuals to affirm their allegiance without invoking religious belief.

Becoming an Australian citizen involves meeting eligibility requirements, including residency, knowledge of Australia, and good character. Successfully completing these requirements culminates in reciting the Oath or making an Affirmation of Allegiance. The Affirmation is identical to the Oath, except that the words "under God" are omitted, and "I pledge my loyalty" is replaced with "I solemnly and sincerely affirm".

The Oath of Allegiance is legally binding and is considered a symbolic commitment to the responsibilities and privileges of Australian citizenship.
