New Synagogue (Gliwice)

The New Synagogue in Gliwice (German: Gleiwitz) was a synagogue located in what is now Gliwice, Poland. Constructed in the late 19th century to serve the growing Jewish community of the city, it replaced an older, smaller synagogue. The New Synagogue was designed in a Moorish Revival style, a common architectural choice for synagogues during that period. It featured elaborate decorations and a prominent dome.

The synagogue served as a central place of worship and community gathering for the Jewish population of Gleiwitz/Gliwice for several decades. It hosted religious services, celebrations, and community events.

During Kristallnacht, on the night of November 9-10, 1938, the New Synagogue was set on fire by Nazi paramilitary forces. The interior was completely destroyed, and the building was severely damaged. The ruins were later demolished.

Today, there is no remaining structure of the New Synagogue in Gliwice. A memorial plaque commemorates the synagogue and the Jewish community that perished during the Holocaust. The location of the former synagogue serves as a reminder of the rich Jewish history of Gliwice and the devastating impact of Nazi persecution.
