Mount Martin (Alaska)

Mount Martin is a stratovolcano located in the Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, United States. It is part of the Aleutian Range and lies approximately 10 miles (16 km) west of the Novarupta volcano, the site of the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century.

Mount Martin is primarily composed of andesite and dacite lavas and pyroclastic deposits. Its summit reaches an elevation of 6,104 feet (1,860 meters). The volcano displays evidence of past glacial activity, including cirques and U-shaped valleys.

Mount Martin is considered an active volcano, although it has not experienced any confirmed eruptions in historical times. Fumaroles, vents that emit steam and volcanic gases, are present near the summit crater, indicating ongoing geothermal activity. The Alaskan Volcano Observatory (AVO) monitors Mount Martin for signs of unrest.

The area surrounding Mount Martin is sparsely populated and primarily accessed by air or water. The volcano is a popular destination for mountaineering and hiking, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. The remote location and challenging terrain contribute to its relatively pristine and untouched environment.
