Messiasia
Messiasia is a genus of robber flies (Asilidae) found primarily in South America. The genus belongs to the subfamily Asilinae. Characterized by their robust build and predatory behavior, Messiasia species are typically found in open habitats where they ambush other insects. The genus is named in honor of Brazilian entomologist Maria Cristina Messias. Diagnostic features often involve the morphology of the antennae, legs, and male genitalia, although specific identification to the species level often requires expert examination. While not extensively studied, Messiasia species play a role in their respective ecosystems as insect predators, contributing to the regulation of insect populations.
