Lake Success (lake)

Lake Success is a former village in the town of North Hempstead, located within Nassau County, on Long Island, New York, United States. It is primarily known for being the temporary headquarters of the United Nations from 1946 to 1952, a period that marked the organization's early years and development.

The name "Lake Success" derives from a local legend. It is said that Native American leader, Sachem, was unable to determine whether to plant corn or fish the waters of the lake. An old Indian woman (sometimes named as Nan) advised him to do both. The crop was successful, and the lake was thereafter called Success.

The United Nations' presence in Lake Success occurred after World War II. The Sperry Gyroscope Corporation’s plant, a large industrial complex located near the lake, was repurposed to house the UN's various departments and agencies. While the UN General Assembly met at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York, much of the administrative and functional work of the organization occurred in Lake Success. This included the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the Trusteeship Council.

The UN's tenure in Lake Success ended when its permanent headquarters in New York City was completed. The departure of the United Nations significantly altered the character of the area. Today, Lake Success is a prosperous suburban community with a mix of residential areas, commercial centers, and office parks. The area retains a degree of historical significance due to its association with the early years of the United Nations.
