Jwala (goddess)

Jwala, also spelled as Jawala or Jvalamukhi, is a Hindu goddess, often considered an aspect or manifestation of Durga or Shakti. The name "Jwala" translates to "flame," and she is typically represented by a continuously burning flame emanating from rock. This association with fire often links her to purification, energy, and divine power.

Worship of Jwala Devi is centered around her shrines which contain naturally occurring flames fueled by geological activity, typically methane gas. These flames are considered sacred and represent the physical manifestation of the goddess. The most famous temple dedicated to Jwala Devi is the Jwalamukhi Temple in Himachal Pradesh, India, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.

Devotees visit Jwala Devi temples seeking blessings for prosperity, protection, and the fulfillment of desires. The rituals performed at these temples often involve offerings of sweets, flowers, and other items into the flames. The flames are viewed as a direct connection to the goddess, allowing devotees to communicate with her and receive her grace. The eternal flames also serve as a reminder of the goddess's eternal power and presence.

While generally considered a manifestation of Durga or Shakti, some traditions identify Jwala as an independent goddess with her own distinct characteristics and mythology. Her significance varies regionally, but the fundamental association with fire and divine feminine power remains consistent.
