Junta of Commanders of the Armed Forces 1971 (Bolivia)
The Junta of Commanders of the Armed Forces 1971 was a military government that ruled Bolivia for a brief period in 1971, following a coup d'état led by Colonel Hugo Banzer Suárez against the left-leaning government of President Juan José Torres.
The junta comprised the commanders of the three branches of the Bolivian armed forces: the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy. These individuals initially held supreme power, but this was quickly transferred to Banzer, who emerged as the dominant figure and became the de facto president.
The junta's primary objectives were to stabilize the country after a period of political turmoil and to reverse the socialist-inspired policies of the Torres government. It quickly dissolved the People's Assembly, banned political parties, and cracked down on labor unions and leftist organizations. This ushered in a period of authoritarian rule under Banzer, who governed Bolivia for seven years with military backing. The Junta effectively ceased to exist after Banzer consolidated his power.
