Born in Toronto, Ontario, Wright was a prominent figure in Canadian rowing for many years. He came from a family with a strong rowing background; his father, Joseph Wright Sr., was also an Olympic rower.

In 1928, he won the silver medal with his partner Jack Guest in the double sculls event at the Amsterdam Olympics, losing to the American team of Paul Costello and Charles McIlvaine.

Four years later, at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, Wright competed in the single sculls. He finished fourth in the competition.
