John Rous

John Rous (c. 1411 – 1492) was an English antiquarian, historian, and chaplain known primarily for his work, the Historia Regum Anglie (History of the Kings of England). He was a native of Warwickshire and spent much of his life in and around Warwick, particularly at the College of St. Mary.

Rous's Historia Regum Anglie is a valuable, albeit biased, historical source covering English history from the mythical founding of Britain up to the reign of Henry VII. He is particularly noted for his detailed descriptions of the Wars of the Roses and his strong Yorkist sympathies. His work provides insight into the political climate and perspectives of the 15th century.

Beyond the Historia Regum Anglie, Rous also compiled a roll of the Earls of Warwick and wrote other historical and antiquarian treatises. His writings offer insights into the architecture, heraldry, and social customs of his time. Although his historical interpretations are sometimes questioned due to his biases and reliance on legend, his work remains significant for its comprehensive scope and its detailed depictions of the era in which he lived. His manuscripts are important resources for scholars studying late medieval England.
