John McCarthy (Australian bishop)

John McCarthy (born 26 June 1928, died 29 October 2018) was an Australian Roman Catholic bishop. He served as the Bishop of Sandhurst from 1973 to 1997.

Born in Melbourne, McCarthy was ordained a priest on 27 July 1952. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne and Titular Bishop of Abaradira on 17 March 1971. He received episcopal consecration on 21 April 1971 from Archbishop James Robert Knox.

On 29 March 1973, he was appointed Bishop of Sandhurst. He retired from this position on 1 July 1997.

McCarthy was known for his commitment to Catholic education and his active participation in various diocesan initiatives during his tenure as Bishop of Sandhurst.
