John Howe (bishop)

John Howe (1920 – 2001) was an Anglican bishop. He served as the Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane in the Scottish Episcopal Church from 1955 to 1989.

Born in Lisburn, County Antrim, Howe was educated at Campbell College, Belfast, and Trinity College Dublin. He was ordained a deacon in 1943 and a priest in 1944. He served as a curate in Belfast before becoming Rector of St. Michael and All Angels, Edinburgh in 1950.

In 1955, Howe was elected Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane. During his tenure, he was known for his commitment to ecumenism, working to build bridges between different Christian denominations. He also played a significant role in the life of the Scottish Episcopal Church and the wider Anglican Communion.

Howe retired as Bishop in 1989. He died in 2001. His publications include works on theology and church history.
