John Hicks (American football)
John Hicks (born August 20, 1951, died June 3, 2016) was an American football offensive guard. He played college football at Ohio State University and professional football in the National Football League (NFL).
Hicks was a standout player at Ohio State under coach Woody Hayes. He won the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award in 1973, recognizing him as the nation's best interior lineman. He was also a unanimous All-American selection that same year. Hicks was a key part of the Buckeyes' powerful running game.
Hicks was drafted third overall by the New York Giants in the 1974 NFL Draft. He played with the Giants from 1974 to 1978. He then played for the Cleveland Browns in 1979 and 1980 before retiring from the NFL.
Following his football career, Hicks worked in the insurance industry. He remained a prominent figure in the Ohio State football community and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
