John Hawkins (Maryland politician)
John Hawkins (born c. 1760, died January 11, 1816) was an American politician and planter from Maryland. He served as a United States Senator from Maryland from 1796 to 1798.
Hawkins was born in Prince George's County, Maryland. He engaged in planting and served in the Maryland House of Delegates representing Prince George's County from 1789 to 1790 and again from 1794 to 1795.
In 1796, Hawkins was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Federalist to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Henry. He served from December 9, 1796, until his own resignation on October 3, 1798. Following his Senate service, he returned to his planting interests in Maryland. He died in Prince George's County on January 11, 1816, and is buried in the Hawkins family cemetery.
