Jef Last

Jef Last (January 2, 1898 – February 13, 1972) was a Dutch poet, writer, translator and diplomat. A significant figure in Dutch literature, Last was known for his socialist and anti-fascist views.

Born in The Hague, Netherlands, Last was initially influenced by expressionism. He later developed a strong commitment to socialism, which became a central theme in his work. He was involved in the Spanish Civil War, fighting on the Republican side. This experience heavily influenced his writing and solidified his anti-fascist stance.

Last's literary works encompass a variety of genres, including poetry, novels, plays, and travelogues. Some of his most notable works include the novel Zuiderzee (1934), and his collection of poems Bakboord (1928). After World War II, Last continued to write and was active in various cultural and political organizations. He served as a cultural attaché in Indonesia for a period. His work often reflected his ongoing commitment to social justice and international understanding.
