James Berkeley (bishop)

James Berkeley (died 1727) was an Anglican bishop of Cloyne in Ireland.

Berkeley was the fourth son of Charles Berkeley, 2nd Earl of Berkeley. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, earning a B.A. in 1699, an M.A. in 1702, and a D.D. in 1711. He was ordained a priest in the Church of England.

His ecclesiastical career included:

  • Prebendary of Westminster Abbey (1706-1717)
  • Dean of Wells (1711-1717)
  • Bishop of Cloyne (appointed 18 April 1717, consecrated 28 April 1717)

Berkeley served as Bishop of Cloyne until his death in 1727. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. He was considered a man of significant social standing and connection, owing to his family's aristocratic status. His tenure as Bishop of Cloyne was largely uneventful in the historical record.
