HMS Oxley
HMS Oxley was an Odin-class submarine of the Royal Navy, and one of the first two submarines built for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Originally designated HMAS Oxley and HMAS Otway, they were transferred to the Royal Navy in 1931 and renamed HMS Oxley and HMS Otway respectively.
Oxley was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1927. Prior to World War II, she served primarily in the Mediterranean.
At the outbreak of World War II, HMS Oxley was operating in Norwegian waters. On 10 September 1939, she was mistakenly sunk by HMS Triton, another British submarine, off Norway. Triton misidentified Oxley as a German submarine. This was the first major loss of the Royal Navy in World War II. A survivor, Lieutenant Commander Harold Bone, the Captain, was rescued.
