HMAS Melbourne (FFG 05)
HMAS Melbourne (FFG 05) was an Adelaide-class guided-missile frigate of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Named after the city of Melbourne, Victoria, she was the third ship of the class to be built.
Melbourne was laid down in Williamstown, Victoria, in 1985, launched in 1989, and commissioned in 1992. During her active service, Melbourne participated in numerous international exercises and deployments, including operations in the Persian Gulf and East Timor. Her primary role was to provide air defence, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
The Melbourne was equipped with a Mark 13 missile launcher for SM-2MR anti-air missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles, an Oto Melara 76 mm gun, and a Phalanx close-in weapon system. She also carried two S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopters for anti-submarine warfare and surveillance.
In 2019, Melbourne was decommissioned from the RAN. She was subsequently sold for scrap in 2021. The ship's bell was gifted to the City of Melbourne.
