Grovatnet

Grovatnet is a lake located in Sunndal Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The lake is situated in the Sunndalen valley, just east of the village of Sunndalsøra.

Geography:

Grovatnet is a relatively long and narrow lake, stretching for approximately 5 kilometers. It is surrounded by steep mountains, characteristic of the Norwegian fjord landscape. The lake's primary inflow comes from several smaller streams and rivers that drain the surrounding mountain areas. Its outflow is the river Usma, which flows into the river Driva and ultimately into the Sunndalsfjorden.

History:

Grovatnet is known for its connection to one of the largest landslides in Norwegian history. In 1905, a large rockslide plunged into the lake, creating a massive wave that devastated the surrounding area and caused significant loss of life. Later, in 1908, another, smaller landslide occurred, exacerbating the damage. These events prompted significant research into landslide risk assessment in the region. The landslides served as a crucial case study for understanding the dynamics of such events and mitigating their impact.
