Greenland (Folketing constituency)

Greenland is one of the two constituencies that elect members to the Folketing, the parliament of the Kingdom of Denmark. The other constituency is the Faroe Islands. Greenland elects two members of parliament (MPs).

The constituency encompasses the entire territory of Greenland, an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Unlike mainland Denmark, Greenland enjoys significant self-government, including its own parliament, the Inatsisartut. However, Greenland remains part of the Kingdom and its citizens are Danish citizens who are eligible to vote in Folketing elections.

Elections in Greenland follow the same rules as in mainland Denmark. However, due to the unique circumstances and political landscape of Greenland, the political parties that contest the seats often differ from those prominent in Denmark itself. Local Greenlandic parties, often focused on issues of autonomy, independence, and resource management, tend to dominate the electoral process.

The elected MPs from Greenland represent the interests of the Greenlandic population in the Danish parliament. They participate in debates, vote on legislation, and advocate for Greenland's specific needs and concerns within the broader context of the Kingdom of Denmark. Their role is particularly important in areas where Danish law impacts Greenland, such as foreign policy, defense, and financial support.

The allocation of two seats to Greenland reflects the recognition of its status as a distinct part of the Kingdom of Denmark with its own unique population and circumstances. The Greenlandic MPs play a vital role in bridging the gap between Greenland and Denmark and ensuring that Greenland's voice is heard in the Danish political arena.
