Gold Hill (New Mexico)
Gold Hill is an unincorporated community located in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. It is situated in the Burro Mountains, approximately 18 miles southwest of Silver City.
Gold Hill was historically a mining camp, established during the late 19th century gold and silver mining boom in the region. While never a large town, it supported the surrounding mines with services and housing for miners and their families. The settlement derived its name from the nearby Gold Hill mining claim, a prominent feature of the area's mining activity.
The area surrounding Gold Hill is characterized by rugged terrain and sparse vegetation, typical of the southwestern New Mexico landscape. Remnants of the mining era, including abandoned mines and tailings piles, are still visible in the vicinity.
Today, Gold Hill is a sparsely populated area, consisting primarily of private residences. There are no significant commercial establishments or public facilities located within the community. Its economy is largely based on ranching and small-scale agriculture, with some residents also working in nearby Silver City.
The community lacks official census designation, and population figures are not readily available. Gold Hill's historical significance lies primarily in its role as a support center for mining operations during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
