Cro-Mags
The Cro-Mags are an American hardcore punk band formed in New York City in 1981. They are considered pioneers of the crossover thrash genre, blending hardcore punk with elements of thrash metal. The band's sound is characterized by aggressive, metallic riffs, intense drumming, and politically and socially charged lyrics, often drawing inspiration from Hare Krishna philosophy and street culture.
The Cro-Mags' history is marked by internal conflicts and lineup changes. The core members have included Harley Flanagan (bass, vocals), John Joseph (vocals), and Parris Mayhew (guitar). Disputes over band ownership and creative control have led to multiple versions of the band existing simultaneously, sometimes touring and recording under the same name. These legal battles have been a significant part of the band's narrative.
Their debut album, The Age of Quarrel, released in 1986, is widely regarded as a classic of the hardcore genre. Other notable albums include Best Wishes (1989) and Alpha Omega (1992). The band's influence can be heard in the music of numerous hardcore, metal, and crossover bands.
Despite the controversies and changing lineups, the Cro-Mags have maintained a dedicated fanbase and continue to tour and record. Their impact on the development of hardcore and crossover music remains significant.
