Gallatin County Courthouse (Illinois)
The Gallatin County Courthouse, located in Shawneetown, Illinois, is the primary seat of government for Gallatin County. The current courthouse, completed in 1939, is the third courthouse to serve the county. It replaced an earlier courthouse built in 1886, which was itself built to replace the original courthouse from the early 19th century. The architecture of the 1939 building is characterized by its Art Deco style, common in public buildings of the era. The courthouse houses the county's judicial courts, government offices, and historical records. It is a significant landmark within Shawneetown and serves as a focal point for county administration and community activities. Historically, courthouses in Gallatin County have played an important role in the development and governance of the region, witnessing key events and shaping the legal and political landscape of southeastern Illinois.
