Fulda (district)

Fulda is a Landkreis (district) in the northeast of Hesse, Germany. It is located in the east of the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis, and is part of the East Hesse region.

Geography

The district is largely characterized by the Rhön Mountains in the east and the Vogelsberg Mountains in the west. The Fulda River flows through the district from north to south, giving the district its name.

History

The district was created in 1972 through the merger of the former districts of Fulda and Hünfeld. The area has a rich history, centered around the city of Fulda and its important abbey, the Fulda Monastery, which was a significant cultural and religious center in the early Middle Ages.
