Frank Fahy (politician)

Frank Fahy (1880 – 1953) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as Ceann Comhairle (Speaker) of Dáil Éireann from 1932 to 1951, making him the longest-serving holder of the office.

Born in Kilchreest, County Galway, he was educated at Blackrock College and University College Galway. He became a teacher, spending most of his career in Galway.

Fahy was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for Galway South at the 1932 general election and was immediately elected Ceann Comhairle. He held the position through five general elections, remaining impartial in his role despite his party affiliation. His tenure saw significant political upheaval and the drafting of the 1937 Constitution.

After stepping down as Ceann Comhairle in 1951, he remained a TD until his death in 1953. He was succeeded as Ceann Comhairle by Patrick Hogan. Fahy is remembered for his long and distinguished service as Speaker of the Dáil and his commitment to the parliamentary process.
