Edward Lipiński (economist)

Edward Lipiński (October 18, 1888 – July 13, 1986) was a prominent Polish economist, socialist, and intellectual. He is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Polish economic thought of the 20th century.

Born in Łódź, then part of the Russian Empire, Lipiński was a key figure in the development of Polish economics, particularly in the fields of welfare economics and the theory of the socialist economy. He advocated for a humane and democratic form of socialism, often challenging the rigid and centralized planning models prevalent in post-World War II Poland.

Lipiński was a professor at the Warsaw School of Economics (Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie, SGH) and played a significant role in shaping the intellectual landscape of Polish economics. He was a founding member of the Polish Economic Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Ekonomiczne).

During the Stalinist period in Poland, Lipiński, while remaining a socialist, faced limitations and criticisms for his independent thinking. Despite this, he continued to contribute to economic discourse, often subtly critiquing the existing system.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Lipiński became increasingly involved in the democratic opposition movement. He was a signatory and influential figure in the Committee for the Defense of Workers (Komitet Obrony Robotników, KOR), a key organization that laid the groundwork for the Solidarity movement. His involvement in KOR demonstrated his commitment to social justice, human rights, and economic reform.

Lipiński's writings covered a wide range of topics, including economic planning, the theory of the firm, and the social and ethical dimensions of economic activity. He emphasized the importance of individual freedom and social responsibility in a just economic system. His works are studied by economists and political scientists seeking a deeper understanding of socialist thought and the challenges of economic transition.

His intellectual legacy continues to influence discussions about economic policy and social justice in Poland and beyond. He is remembered as a principled intellectual who dedicated his life to the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
