Drogheda (Parliament of Ireland constituency)
Drogheda was a parliamentary borough constituency in Ireland, returning one Member of Parliament (MP) to the Parliament of Ireland.
History
The borough was incorporated in 1412. It was represented in the Parliament of Ireland from 1419 until the Act of Union in 1800, when the Parliament was abolished. The town of Drogheda lies close to the boundary between County Louth and County Meath, but was historically treated as a county corporate.
Franchise
The franchise in Drogheda was vested in the freemen and freeholders of the borough. This meant that the right to vote was restricted to a relatively small segment of the population, primarily those holding significant property or having been granted specific privileges.
Post-Union
Following the Act of Union, Drogheda became a constituency in the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
