Later, it came under the rule of various dynasties, including the Mauryas, Guptas, and Palas. During the medieval period, it was ruled by local chieftains and zamindars before coming under Mughal control. The British East India Company gained control in the 18th century. After the partition of India in 1947, Dinajpur was divided, with the eastern part becoming part of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and the western part remaining in India.

Kantajew Temple, a renowned example of terracotta architecture, is a major tourist attraction. The Singra Forest is also a notable ecological feature.
