Dan Evins

Dan Evins (born October 26, 1931, DeKalb County, Tennessee – died March 11, 2012, Lebanon, Tennessee) was an American businessman and the founder of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.

Evins graduated from Lebanon High School and attended Vanderbilt University and later the YMCA Law School (now Nashville School of Law). Before founding Cracker Barrel, he worked in his family's gasoline distribution business and later as a Shell Oil jobber. He observed that interstate travelers often lacked a convenient place to stop for a homestyle meal and to purchase unique gifts and goods.

In 1969, Evins opened the first Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Lebanon, Tennessee. The concept combined a restaurant serving Southern-style cuisine with a retail store selling nostalgic candy, toys, and crafts. The restaurant aimed to evoke a sense of warmth and nostalgia, appealing to travelers seeking comfort and familiarity.

Evins served as Chairman and CEO of Cracker Barrel until 2001. Under his leadership, the company expanded rapidly, becoming a well-known chain across the United States. He remained involved with the company as Chairman Emeritus until his death.

Evins received several awards and recognitions for his entrepreneurial achievements, including induction into the Tennessee Business Hall of Fame. He was also involved in numerous charitable and civic organizations.
