Coulmiers

Coulmiers refers to a village and commune in the Loiret department of north-central France. It is primarily known for being the site of the Battle of Coulmiers, fought on November 9, 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War. This battle represented a significant, though temporary, French victory.

The Battle of Coulmiers saw French forces, under the command of General d'Aurelle de Paladines, defeat Bavarian troops commanded by General von der Tann. This victory boosted French morale and briefly disrupted the Prussian siege of Paris, forcing the Prussians to divert troops. However, the strategic advantage gained was short-lived, as the French were subsequently defeated in later engagements.

Today, Coulmiers remains a small, primarily agricultural village. The battle is commemorated by a monument in the village. The name "Coulmiers" is often associated with discussions and analyses of the Franco-Prussian War, especially concerning the military strategies and the impact of early French successes on the overall outcome of the conflict.
