Coriantumr (last Jaredite king)
Coriantumr was the last king of the Jaredites, as recorded in the Book of Mormon. His story is primarily found in the Book of Ether. He was a descendant of Jared and reigned during a time of great wickedness and societal collapse among the Jaredites.
Coriantumr is portrayed as a complex figure. He was a powerful warrior and leader, leading armies in numerous battles against various rebel factions and rivals for the throne. He is often described as being mighty in stature and strength. However, he also participated in the widespread wickedness that characterized his kingdom, contributing to its eventual destruction.
The Book of Ether recounts a long and devastating civil war that consumed the Jaredite nation, fueled by ambition, revenge, and wickedness. Coriantumr was a key player in this conflict, often finding himself at the center of the battles and political intrigue. He fought against a succession of rivals, including Gilead, Lib, and Shiz.
The prophet Ether prophesied of the complete destruction of the Jaredite nation, including Coriantumr himself, unless they repented. Despite Ether's warnings and exhortations, the people, including Coriantumr, refused to heed the prophet's message.
The final battle of the Jaredite civil war took place at the Hill Cumorah. In this battle, almost the entire Jaredite nation was destroyed. Coriantumr alone remained alive from his side, while Shiz was the sole survivor from the opposing side. After Shiz was slain by Coriantumr, Coriantumr ultimately fell wounded but was later discovered and lived among the people of Zarahemla.
Coriantumr's story serves as a cautionary tale within the Book of Mormon, illustrating the consequences of wickedness, the importance of heeding prophetic warnings, and the destructive nature of unchecked ambition and violence. His reign marks the end of the Jaredite civilization, a civilization that was once blessed but ultimately destroyed itself through its own choices.
