Coleonyx

Coleonyx is a genus of nocturnal geckos native to North America, commonly known as banded geckos. They are distinguished from other geckos by their movable eyelids and granular scales, features not found in many other gecko species.

Description

Banded geckos are generally small to medium-sized, ranging in total length from approximately 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm). Their skin is typically patterned with alternating bands of dark and light colors, although patterns can vary considerably within and between species. The coloration and patterns can provide camouflage in their natural environments. Unlike many geckos, Coleonyx species lack adhesive toe pads, relying on claws for climbing.

Distribution and Habitat

Coleonyx species are found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Their distribution generally correlates with arid and semi-arid habitats, including deserts, grasslands, and rocky areas. They are terrestrial geckos, spending much of their time on the ground or under rocks and debris.

Behavior and Ecology

Banded geckos are primarily nocturnal, becoming active during the cooler parts of the night to forage for insects and other invertebrates. They are generally shy and secretive, seeking refuge in burrows or under rocks during the day. Their movable eyelids allow them to keep their eyes clean and protected in dusty environments. They are oviparous, laying eggs in clutches that hatch after an incubation period.

Taxonomy

Coleonyx belongs to the family Eublepharidae, which also includes leopard geckos and other eyelid geckos. There are currently several recognized species within the Coleonyx genus, each with distinct geographic ranges and variations in morphology. The classification of Coleonyx species has been subject to revision based on molecular and morphological data.
