Bougré

Bougré, also sometimes spelled "bougret," is an archaic nautical term primarily used in French maritime terminology. It refers to the forward-most mast on a sailing vessel, specifically when that vessel has more than two masts. While the exact function and design of the bougré could vary depending on the specific vessel and time period, it was typically smaller than the mainmast and used to carry sails that helped with steering and overall maneuverability. Its position ahead of the mainmast contributed to the vessel's ability to sail closer to the wind. The term is rarely used in modern English nautical contexts, having been largely replaced by more specific designations depending on the rig of the ship.
