Bob Lucas (footballer)
Bob Lucas (born Robert Lucas, 25 October 1927 – 24 February 2011) was an English football player and manager. He is best known for his long and successful spell as manager of Dorchester Town.
Lucas began his playing career as an inside forward for Brighton & Hove Albion in 1947, after serving in the Royal Navy. He also played for Swindon Town, Newport County and Exeter City.
After retiring as a player, Lucas moved into coaching and management. He managed Weymouth before taking the helm at Dorchester Town in 1962. He managed Dorchester for 27 years, a period of unprecedented success for the club. Under his leadership, Dorchester Town won the Southern League championship in 1980 and reached the third round of the FA Cup in 1986, losing to Wimbledon. He also led the club to numerous other league and cup titles.
Lucas was known for his tactical acumen, man-management skills, and dedication to the club. He was a highly respected figure in non-league football and is considered a legend at Dorchester Town. The club's stadium, the Avenue Stadium, has a stand named in his honour. He retired from management in 1989 and remained a supporter of Dorchester Town until his death in 2011.
