Bircza
Bircza is a village in Przemyśl County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, in southeastern Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Bircza. The village is situated approximately 24 kilometres (15 mi) southwest of Przemyśl and 50 km (31 mi) southeast of the regional capital Rzeszów.
Historically, Bircza has been subject to various cultural and political influences. Before World War II, a significant portion of its population consisted of Ukrainian Greek Catholics, alongside Polish Roman Catholics and Jewish residents. The area has a complex history marked by shifting borders and ethnic tensions.
Following World War II, the ethnic composition of Bircza and the surrounding region changed drastically, largely due to population transfers and displacement associated with Operation Vistula. The formerly mixed population became predominantly Polish.
Today, Bircza serves as a local administrative center and a point of interest for those interested in the history and cultural heritage of the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands. Its gmina encompasses a number of smaller villages and hamlets.
